Madison Avenue...

It's a beautiful day here in NYC...supposed to be 65 degrees...in late November no less! Waking up today and looking out onto Madison Avenue is a creative inspiring thing.  In our industry...this is our Mecca and where it ALL goes down. Cole's happy to be here on his first of many visits to the city. Every time I get here i am energized with creativity and business ideas.  Design is everywhere here, and the pace of business is insane.  It's all ripe with opportunity. In spite of the 800 sq. ft. you get for $1.5mil, the expensive transportation, high crime, and New York attitudes, this place does it for me.

Like any time we are here...we will live as New Yorkers...walk over to the park, sip some coffee...and take some time with a clear head to be thankful for what we have that allows us to experience this. It is exciting to let my son experience this at such a young age.  While he won't remember this particular trip, I am hopeful he will grow to appreciate how much the Big Blue Marble has to offer him.

Simple post.  Simple day.

Never forget...

Blackjack is a Bust!

NOTE: I had originally typed this via the "Blackjack" but I am getting an unknown error (500) when I try to publish. Neat. Further infuriating me...

Samsungblackjackl_1This phone [see below] while sexy and small, is a piece of crap. Today the ActiveSync operation along with Blackjack lost about 75 notes in Outlook and were it not for my trusty Treo w/Palm OS (3 valiant years of service, 100,000 miles, 3 continents, 10 states, a dozen drops from 6', multiple beer spills, etc.), and bulletproof backup, I may well have lost some VERY important data.  Hold off on this baby if you are a business user.  If you have a Treo now, you'll hate it.

It runs out of space quick.  I have done 3 wipe-out resets...losing all my settings (note: a Treo full reset you run a Sync and the phone will be 100% the same as it was before.  Ring tones, every email, SMS, etc...all restored.) I have had 4 calls to Cingular/Samsung customer service and have spent WAY too much personal time "changing phones". I think I can actually hear my trusty Treo laughing "I told you so" like a scorned first wife.

If you are looking for a new gadget, there are better alternatives coming from my friends at Palm...the Treo 680, and the even better Treo 750.  If you cant wait...get a Pearl.

We'll see if this thing can make it through vacation here.  If not, you treasure hunters can come pick up my Blackjack in a street performers offering hat at the subway stop by our apartment...53rd & Lexington, NY, NY.

Our mobile phones are no longer just for calls...they are absolutely an extension of our persona's. When they don't perform, we aren't the same.  Here are my lessons learned on this little adventure:

  1. don't change phones 3 days before a trip
  2. don't buy phones on the day they come out (ya right!)
  3. always have current backups of all your Outlook (or mac-ie) data
  4. don't give up your old phone and service until the new one works properly
  5. smaller isn't always better

Damn you Blackjack...could have really built ourselves up into something.  Now get your feet off my desk.  I said good day!

New Games are all HYPE - Xbox360 still tops

Boxforza2_2As Sony Playstation3 and Nintendo take a big Wii on eachother.  Team Xbox is busy developing the most insane games you can imagine.  Halo 3 is growing near, Gears of War is astounding but those games require just a little too much dexterity for my little fingers.  Racing games on the other hand, are right up my alley. Take a moment to look at the trailer for Forza Motorsport for the Xbox. If you would have shown me this trailer when i was a kid, it would have blown my mind.

Out with the Treo in with Blackjack [sort of...]

After getting back from Atlanta whis week, I have to admit that I was feeling a little 'inferior' after taking some razzing from my friends/clients all proud of their new corporate standard phone, the Blackberry Pearl.  I got over it.

This weekend I was lying on the couch half asleep watching Saturday Night Live when like a sign from above I rubbed my eyes in time to see Cingular's latest ad for my long, long awaited PDA/Smartphone/Crackberry/Treokiller - the Cingular Blackjack (aka the Samsung SGH-i607)...AVAILABLE NOW no less!  More overjoyed I haven't been in a long time.  Immediately I text my pal & Fuze designer Dan and tell him...when you wake...before you brush...get a Blackjack.  And we both did...

More info...

Today Dan & I made the switch from our Treo's over to Blackjack. I also made the switch from T-mobile which I am apprehensive about because for me, T-mobile both internationally and here stateside, has been a GREAT company.  We'll see how this goes now that I am in my new 2 year agreement with the little orange guys.

Cingular_blackjack_5_1Cingular_blackjack_6_1OK, first off Cingular is giving good deals on the Blackjack...nice compared to the usual  rape-job we early adopters get nailed with when a new device comes out.  I think my total bill was in the neighborhood of $400 with accessories, and some pretty maxed out plans. Cosmetic wise, its great. The phone is light, small (.46" thick), full function, and reception is great.  Call quality great. Speaker great. Battery life great.  Streaming video & audio...great. All BLACKJACKS in the true sense of the word. Ahhh but alas, on this parade a little rain must fall. There are a number of things I find unrefined, and unacceptable. Here are my bitches so far:

NOTE: A Blackjack hand rating scale seems applicable here so think of my ratings in those terms.

  • SMS Message threads - threads are not maintained on SMS.  For us in the office, we live on SMS messaging when we all travel. It is convenient to have each of us with a thread that we can continue.  Blackjack dealt us a 13 on this hand...with dealer showing Ace.  This frankly S U C K S and may be a deal breaker.
  • Home page organization - Treo allows you to meticulously position items on your various start menus, Blackjack deals a 16 on this one.  It's Windows and I haven't determined how to customize my home page to include the programs and functions that I want to use frequently.
  • Camera - the Blackjack camera is a 20 in terms of quality. Video is also good. It has nice settings adjustments.  Only thing that is crap is actually finding the Camera Application on the phone.  A little CAMERA button would be appreciated.
  • Support - I'd call this a Pair of 7's - Online support for the Blackjack wasn't ready for Marketing to push it out.  While i was pleasantly surprised on the launch weekend to be able to actually get one at my local Cingular store, I think that the online resources are a bit vague, as are the instructions provided for customization and settings.  This will likely improve.
  • Menus - Samsung dealt us a 12 here as the menu's are not anything close to what the Treo menu system is.  Treo is very intuitive and simple, Samsung takes you FIVE STEPS deep at times just to change a setting.  There are no breadcrumb trails to let you know where you are.
  • ...

These are my current beef's after exactly 3.75 hrs of ownership.  I will update the blog as I decide whether or not I will keep the device.  I will also ask Dan to log some of his gripes as we take it on ourselves to educate the world on Blackjack (much like I did with the Treo600 which I received proudly on opening-day...come to think of it, I feel personally responsible for at least 100 Treo6xx sales for Palm...still waiting on my check)

Anyway, if you have one of these little gems...feel free to post up your own comments. Or, set me straight on some of my bitches. BTW - if we ever catch any of you splitting 10's at the tables, we will of course kill you. [rules]

Aces 'n Eights to you all...

Importance...(revised: Responsibility)

Disclaimer: Let me start by saying that this post is graphic, frank, rambles, ties two seemingly unrelated thoughts together, and has nothing to do with design, advertising, or business at all. it was typed on my Treo so there are likely typo's. Still with me? Read on humans...

The last few days/weeks I have been feeling a little overwhelmed by life. To start, I've been on the road for the better part of the last 8 weeks. Our business is exploding, our clients are growing, my baby is growing...all good things. Many times I hear the answer..."oh you know, just busy" uttered in response to the obligatory question "how'z things goin?". When I hear this, I often wonder to myself...do you have any idea what busy means? Inside ourselves, we make our lives and our problems more significant than the person next to us. This has become human nature. I am currently at a point where I am feeling pressure from all sides and it is making me claustrophobic. The problem...I bring all of it on myself.

Weekend
As I laid awake this weekend for the 2nd night in a row...7am rolled around and on queue, my baby Cole woke up in his usual happy mood...he is so excited that another day is here to learn and experience everything for the first time. It's hard not to set your mind aside and get lost in his. The simplicity of his existence and his needs. Just a little attention, love, food, and some clean drawers. That's all he needs to put an ear to ear grin on. It's beautiful. What, or where along the way, do our perspectives change?

Flight to Atlanta
I had another epiphany today on my flight to Atlanta. A young guy, maybe 20's is on my flight and he is sick...not sure what from or why, but he is ill...really ill. The attendant moved him from the back of the plane up to my row in Poor-man's first class (the exit row) because the middle seat opposite mine was open. Immediately I am watching the reactions of the people around this poor kid. They get uncomfortable...adjust their seats...request a seat change...yet, nobody's first reaction is compassion of any kind. I imagine how uncomfortable it must be to be plunked down between 2 strangers with a barf bag in your hand and no sign of relief, comfort, etc. in sight. It's really a sad moment. He is alone, clutching a bag of ice to his chest, and his hands are trembling. He's very well mannered, shy, polite, very simple appearing. Ask me on any given Monday what my reaction to someone throwing up next to me on a flight would be and I would probably say, disgusting, but today I don't feel this at all. Maybe I feel like, what if it was my little boy sick, or maybe I realize that this guy would certainly not choose to feel the way he does if given the option. I really feel for him.  All I know is that I am thankful it isnt me.

The Moral (so to speak) - and some business relevance...
After posting this, I came across this ad that not only caught my attention because it's great, but also illustrated exactly what I was feeling in at least part of my rambling scenario here. This is an excellent spot for Liberty Mutual - deveoped by Hill | Holiday:

This situation, like waking up to my son smiling and laughing in his crib snap things into focus for me. I don't know what it is that makes us lose sight of our childlike instincts, to be more carefree, but at the same time care for someone, or show them the respect/consideration to ask how they are. I don't know what drives us to the point of stress, illness, oblivion...for the sake of success. Of course by we/us, I mean me. So today I am going to make some life changes. Something every human has the right to do.
